First 1099 & first-year freelance taxes

A 1099 is a report to the IRS, not a bill. Your job is books, set-asides, and the right schedules — starting now, not next April.

If this is your first 1099 year: do not wait for the form

Next federal estimated-tax installment on this site: Tuesday, September 15, 2026 (Q3)

A 1099-NEC is usually mailed in January. Estimated tax is due four times a year on profit you already earned. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more at filing, the calendar on quarterly tax deadlines applies even when no slip has arrived. Prep and set aside; PiggyMath does not e-file.

What a 1099 actually means

Forms like 1099-NEC or 1099-K tell the IRS (and you) what a payer reported. They do not compute your tax. If the form is wrong, fix your records and be ready to explain. If you earned money and no form arrived, you still report it.

Which next step? (first-year decision tree)

Work top to bottom. Each row is a different tool — this page is the map, not a second copy of the calculators.

The $400 SE-tax tripwire

Once net profit from self-employment reaches $400 for the year, you generally owe self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare for the self-employed). That can happen long before you feel “like a business.” See side hustle under $400 if you are still under that line.

Worked numbers for a first 1099 year

Same Schedule SE math as the flagship calculator — default first-year picture of $85,000 gross and $12,000 expenses ($73,000 net), Single, no W-2. Rounded the way that calculator displays dollars.

StepResult
Net profit$73,000
Net earnings ($73,000 × 0.9235)$67,416
Self-employment tax (12.4% + 2.9%)$10,315
Deductible half (against income tax, not against SE tax)$5,157
Equal SE-tax installment if you split the year in four$2,579
If April and June went unpaid, SE slice to catch up by September 15$7,736 (three installments)

That table is the Social Security + Medicare line only. Federal income tax sits on top. On the same $73,000, Single, simple QBI, 0% state, this site’s quarterly engine (federalSetAside) estimates $15,034 combined — about $3,758 per equal quarter, or $11,275 if you are covering three quarters on September 15. Your first-year checklist

  1. Open a separate bank account for freelance deposits.
  2. Track income and expenses monthly (spreadsheet is enough).
  3. Set aside a calculated percent of net profit — start with the set-aside calculator, not a round 30% guess.
  4. Calendar the estimated-tax due dates (Q3 2026 is September 15).
  5. At filing: Schedule C + Schedule SE with your Form 1040. PiggyMath does not e-file.

Quarterly estimates in year one

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, plan estimates. Prior-year safe harbor can be friendlier in a true first year with little or no prior tax — still save cash so April is not a cliff. Use the safe harbor calculator and set-aside calculator.

The IRS quarters are not equal calendar quarters: Q2 is only April–May; Q3 is June 1 – August 31, due September 15. Skipping Q3 because “I have not received a 1099” is the usual first-year miss. The slip is an information return. The payment is a running prepayment on profit.

Frequently asked questions

I got my first 1099 — do I automatically owe SE tax?
You owe SE tax when net self-employment profit reaches $400 for the year, whether or not a 1099 arrived. The form is information, not the tax bill.
What forms will I file?
Most first-year freelancers file Form 1040 with Schedule C (profit/loss) and Schedule SE (self-employment tax), plus 1040-ES estimates during the year if required.
Can I wait until April to pay everything?
You can pay at filing, but you may owe an underpayment penalty if you skipped required quarterly estimates. First-year safe-harbor nuances can help — still set money aside. Next date on this site: September 15, 2026.
The 1099 will not arrive until January — should I skip September 15?
No, if you already expect to owe $1,000 or more. Estimated tax follows profit and the 1040-ES calendar, not the mail date of the information return. Use your own books.
