How much tax on 1099 income?

1099 income is generally self-employment income reported on Schedule C. After ordinary expenses, you pay self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare) and income tax on taxable profit. There is no employer withholding — which is why a dedicated set-aside matters more than the form number on the slip.

1099-NEC, 1099-K and W-2

Use platform and invoice records as the source of truth. A missing or late 1099 does not make income nontaxable; a 1099-K that reports gross before fees means you still deduct those fees on Schedule C.

1099 vs W-2 calculator — same work, different tax stack

People searching “w2 vs 1099 calculator” are usually comparing a salary offer to a contract rate. The 1099 side pays both halves of Social Security and Medicare (this hub’s SE tool), buys its own health cover, and bills fewer hours than a 2,080-hour job. The matching hourly rate is not salary ÷ 2,080. Run 1099 vs W-2 for the equivalent contract rate, then freelance hourly rate if you are pricing from take-home instead of from a job offer.

When the 1099 tax is due

The form does not set the due date. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more at filing, estimated payments follow quarterly tax deadlines — next federal installment for tax year 2026 is September 15, 2026 (Q3). Amounts come from the quarterly calculator or all-in-one estimator, not from the 1099 slip.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on 1099 income?
Expect self-employment tax of roughly 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, plus federal (and often state) income tax. The combined set-aside is often 25–35% of profit depending on brackets and state — use the Freelancer Tax Calculator for a personal estimate.
Is a 1099 tax calculator the same as filing software?
No. PiggyMath estimates what to set aside and which forms to expect. We do not e-file Form 1040 or transmit returns to the IRS.
Do I owe tax if I never received a 1099?
Yes, if you had taxable self-employment income. Payer reporting thresholds do not erase your obligation to report income from your own records.
1099-NEC vs 1099-K — which do freelancers get?
Clients usually issue 1099-NEC for services; payment platforms may issue 1099-K. Report the income once from your books; don’t double-count overlapping forms.
