Fiverr Taxes (2026)

Fiverr does not withhold US income or self-employment tax. Your payout is pre-tax — and service fees only help if you deduct them so you are not taxed on money that never reached you.

What you owe, regardless of paperwork

Fiverr income is self-employment income for US freelancers: it goes on Schedule C, and once net profit for the year reaches $400 you owe self-employment tax (15.3% on 92.35% of profit — Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base plus Medicare with no cap). Federal income tax sits on top. Receiving a 1099 is not what creates the obligation; your Fiverr earnings and fee reports are.

Which form to expect

Depending on volume and how payments are processed, you may see a 1099-NEC and/or a 1099-K. Thresholds change year to year; always reconcile any form to your Fiverr statements. If no form arrives but you were paid, you still report the income. Use the 1099-K threshold checker when a payment volume form is in play.

Fees that reduce taxable profit

Service fees, payment processing fees, and advertising/Boost spend tied to your gigs are generally ordinary business expenses. They lower net profit — which lowers both income tax and SE tax. Track them from Fiverr’s reports rather than guessing from bank deposits alone. Buyer tips and extras are still income when they are yours.

Gigs, Buyer Requests and extras

Custom offers, extras and Buyer Request wins are the same tax category as catalog gigs: business income. Keep screenshots or exports of order details if a dispute or amendment changes the final amount — your books should match what you actually kept after fees.

Self-employment tax only — 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit. Federal and state income tax sit on top. Use the Freelancer Tax Calculator for a combined estimate.

Quarterly payments

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, the IRS expects estimated payments four times a year. Missing them can bring an underpayment penalty even if you pay in full at filing — the safe harbor rule is how many freelancers avoid that. Deadlines live on the 2026–2027 deadlines page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I owe tax on Fiverr income without a 1099?

Yes. Report Schedule C income from your Fiverr earnings statements. A missing 1099 does not make income non-taxable.

Are Fiverr fees deductible?

Yes — service fees, processing fees and Boosts that relate to your gigs are ordinary business expenses that reduce net profit (and SE tax).

How much should I set aside?

A common working figure is 25–30% of net profit for federal SE + income tax, plus state if you have one. Confirm with the set-aside calculator.

Is PiggyMath affiliated with Fiverr?

No. PiggyMath is an independent educational site. We do not partner with Fiverr and we do not e-file returns.
