Self-Employment Tax Calculator 2027 Preview
Statutory SE rates for 2027 are known. The official Social Security wage base is not. This page does not run a fake 2027 calculator.
Working math stays on 2026 until SSA and the IRS publish 2027 inflation amounts.
What is already known for 2027
Self-employment tax is still 15.3% — 12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare — charged on 92.35% of net profit (IRC §1402 / Schedule SE). Those percentages are statutory. They do not wait on next year’s inflation tables.
Medicare still has no wage cap. Additional Medicare Tax remains 0.9% above $200,000 ($250,000 married filing jointly, $125,000 married filing separately). Those thresholds are not inflation-indexed. The Schedule SE filing floor remains $400 of net earnings.
Estimated-tax calendar dates for tax year 2027 are already listed on Quarterly Tax Deadlines 2026 & 2027 (including the June 16 and January 18 weekend/holiday shifts). Dates are not the same thing as 2027 dollar limits.

If you searched “self-employment tax calculator 2027,” you still need a number you can set aside this year. That number uses 2026 IRS/SSA figures until the 2027 publications land.

Why we will not ship a 2027 wage-base calculator yet
The Social Security portion of SE tax stops at the contribution and benefit base. For 2026 that official amount is $184,500. The 2026 OASDI Trustees Report’s intermediate assumptions project $190,200 for 2027 (Table V.C1). Payroll articles often repeat that projection in August. It is still a forecast: the official CBB is computed from the national average wage index and is typically announced in mid-October alongside the COLA. Low-cost and high-cost Trustee alternatives in the same table are not $190,200. Using any of them in a public calculator would present a projection as IRS/SSA law.
Federal income-tax brackets and the standard deduction for tax year 2027 likewise wait on the IRS’s annual inflation revenue procedure, usually October or November. Rates (10% through 37%) are statutory; the dollar thresholds are not. QBI phase-in amounts, 401(k)/IRA limits, and mileage rates follow the same calendar. We already record the 2027 amounts that are official — HSA limits in Rev. Proc. 2026-24 and PTC percentages in Rev. Proc. 2026-26 — on Tax Constants 2027.
What a 2027 SE tax bill will still look like
Until the wage base is posted, the shape of the tax does not change. Net profit × 92.35% is net earnings. 12.4% applies only up to the (still unpublished) wage base after counting W-2 Social Security wages. 2.9% Medicare applies to all net earnings. Half of the SE tax remains deductible against income tax. Crossing $400 of net earnings still triggers Schedule SE. Those rules are why a 2026 calculator is the honest tool for someone planning 2027 set-asides today: it uses a real wage base, and the rate structure will match 2027 except for the cap and any later inflation items.
We will wire 2027 into assets/app.js only after node tools/verify_tax_constants.mjs can match official SSA/IRS sources. The 2027 JSON already fails the check if someone fills in a wage base or standard deduction before those publications exist.
