Upwork Taxes (2026)

Fixed-price or hourly, Upwork contracts are still self-employment income for US freelancers — with fees you should deduct.

What you owe

US contractors report Upwork earnings on Schedule C. Self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare) applies once net profit reaches $400. Client payments and Upwork’s service fees both matter: report revenue correctly and deduct fees so you are not taxed on money you never kept.

Hourly vs fixed-price

Tax treatment is the same category — business income — whether the contract is hourly with a weekly payment or fixed-price with milestones. Keep invoices and the Upwork financial reports; they are your books if a 1099 is late or incomplete.

$20,000$3,000$17,000$2,402.02

Quarterly payments

Agency or marketplace cash flow still triggers estimated tax when you expect to owe $1,000+. Download deadlines from the deadlines page and size payments with the quarterly calculator.

Service fees and what to report

Upwork takes a service fee on contracts. For Schedule C, report the earnings that belong to your business and deduct ordinary platform costs (service fees, Connects, membership) so you are not taxed on money that never reached you. Keep the Upwork financial reports alongside your bank deposits — payout timing and fee timing can differ.

1099-K vs 1099-NEC on Upwork

Depending on how clients pay and how Upwork reports, you may see a 1099-NEC, a 1099-K, or both in some edge setups — and some years a form may arrive late or not at all if thresholds are not met. Thresholds do not decide taxability. Reconcile forms to your own books; do not double-count the same dollar if two forms overlap. The 1099-K threshold checker explains federal vs state reporting lines.

Contracts, hourly and fixed-price

Hourly (with weekly payments) and fixed-price (milestones) are the same tax category: business income. Escrow releases are still income when they become yours under the contract. If you use an agency account, confirm whether income is yours or the agency’s before it hits Schedule C.

Remote work and mileage

Most Upwork work is remote. Commuting from your bedroom to your desk is not deductible mileage. Business miles can still apply for client meetings, coworking tied to a job, or equipment runs — log them and compare methods with the mileage calculator or mileage vs actual tool. Home office rules are often the larger deduction for remote freelancers; see the home office calculator.

Quarterly estimated taxes

Variable Upwork cash flow is exactly why equal quarterly estimates can feel wrong. Use the annual estimate from the Upwork tax calculator workflow, then decide equal installments vs annualization if income is seasonal (Form 2210 / safe harbor).

Frequently asked questions

Is Upwork income self-employment income?

Yes for independent contractors. It belongs on Schedule C, and SE tax applies once net profit hits $400 for the year.

Does Upwork withhold taxes?

Upwork may withhold for some non-US situations or specific tax settings, but US freelancers generally receive gross-style payouts and must handle estimates themselves.

Can I deduct Connects and membership fees?

Yes — Connects, membership tiers and related platform fees that support your freelance business are typically deductible.

Will I get a 1099-K or 1099-NEC from Upwork?

It depends on payment rails and reporting rules for the year. Treat your Upwork reports as the book of record and reconcile any forms so you do not double-count. Thresholds affect forms, not whether income is taxable.

Can remote Upwork freelancers deduct mileage?

Only for deductible business driving — not the commute from bed to desk. Many remote freelancers benefit more from a valid home office deduction than from mileage.

Is PiggyMath affiliated with Upwork?

No. PiggyMath is an independent educational site. We do not partner with Upwork and we do not e-file returns.
